Review: One Button Benny

Tonight, T finally picked out a book we bought following a workshop at this years Bradford Literature Festival – One Button Benny by Alan Windram and Chloe Holwill-Hunter.

Benny is a robot with only one button – a big, red thing imprinted with the words ‘Only Press in an Emergency.’ Other robots like to tease him about this and show off all the fancy things their various buttons do. But all that changes when, one day, some alien metal collectors arrive. Benny finally has an emergency which requires the pressing of his button and young readers will be amazed on what happens when he takes the plunge!

This is a sweet story about an underdog come good and who doesn’t enjoy that?! Think FA Cup minnows on a giant-killing and you’re about right for the pitch of this book. There is plenty of opportunity to try out robot voices and the illustrations are cute and engaging. T enjoyed himself and told me, “it was good because I loved it when he won.”
